Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Doomben Cup is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred horse race for 3 year olds and over, run under Weight for Age conditions over a distance of 2020 metres at Doomben Racecourse, Brisbane in May.

The Doomben Cup race is one of the most fabulous weight-for-age Staying races in Australia. It was initially conducted as a principal race held over more than ten furlongs (from 1933 to 1937). From 1938 onwards, the distance was increased to eleven furlongs. It was converted into a Group 1 race from 1980.

The Gr2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) held two weeks previously at the Gold Coast is the best guide to this race with Above Deck (2006) being the last horse to win both events. Mr Bureaucrat (2002), Might And Power (1998), Danewin (1995), Durbridge (1994), Rough Habit (1991-92) all won the Hollindale Stakes before winning this race.
